Stephen King

The Master of Horror

Stephen Edwin King, born 21 September 1947 in Portland, Maine, started writing young and wasted no time terrifying generations of readers. He became famous as the master of modern horror with Carrie and The Shining, earning an immediate spot in literary history.

In the 1980s and 90s he popped up in cultural blockbusters like The Stand, It, Misery, and The Shawshank Redemption. Grown-up King happily kept typing away, becoming a fan-favourite icon across multi-genre publishing, film adaptations, and countless global bestsellers.

These days he balances writing sprawling novels with mentoring, social commentary, and proving that terrifying audiences is basically a lifelong career.

The Defining Career Milestones

While Harris has compiled dozens of film and television credits, including classic 90s hits like City Slickers, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, and a major run on the sitcom Roseanne, her status was truly forged across several groundbreaking motion pictures that altered the trajectory of her career.

1. Carrie & The Breakout Success (1973–1974)

  • The Shift: The struggle that transformed a struggling high school English teacher into a full-time literary phenomenon.

  • Impact: Living in a trailer and working low-paying jobs, King famously threw the initial draft of Carrie into the trash, only for his wife, Tabitha, to rescue it and insist he finish it. When Doubleday published the hardcover in 1973, it performed modestly; however, the paperback rights were sold to Signet Books for a life-changing $400,000 in 1974. The massive financial windfall allowed King to quit teaching and dedicate himself entirely to writing, setting the stage for one of the most prolific careers in modern literature.

2. The Dark Tower Series (1970–2004)

  • The Shift: A decades-long epic passion project that became the narrative spine of his entire literary universe.

  • Impact: Inspired by Robert Browning’s poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, King began writing The Gunslinger in 1970. Spanning eight main novels written over more than thirty years, The Dark Tower evolved from an ambitious high-fantasy western into King’s magnum opus. The series eventually tied together disparate worlds from across his bibliography, connecting novels like 'Salem's Lot, The Stand, IT, and Insomnia into a single, cohesive multiverse centered around Roland Deschain.

3. Maximum Overdrive (1986)

  • The Shift: His one and only foray behind the camera as a feature film director.

  • Impact: Adapted from his 1973 short story "Trucks," King stepped into the director's chair for this 1986 action-horror film about machines coming to life and turning on humanity. Backed by a soundtrack composed entirely by AC/DC, the chaotic production was notoriously plagued by injuries and heavy substance use. While critically slammed upon release and a box-office flop, King candidly acknowledged the film's shortcomings in later years, and it has since earned a beloved cult following among genre fans as a unique, wild relic of mid-80s horror cinema.

4. The Near-Fatal 1999 Van Accident

  • The Shift: A horrific real-life tragedy that almost ended his life and permanently reshaped his writing career.

  • Impact: On June 19, 1999, while walking along Route 5 in Lovell, Maine, King was struck from behind by a minivan. The collision left him with a collapsed lung, multiple fractures to his leg and hip, and a lacerated scalp. His harrowing recovery required multiple surgeries and intense physical therapy. The trauma profoundly influenced his work, directly inspiring his non-fiction masterpiece On Writing (2000), weaving its way into the final installments of The Dark Tower, and shaping novels like Duma Key (2008), which directly addressed pain, healing, and creative obsession.

5. Literary Prestige & Lifetime Honors (2003–Present)

In recent years, Stephen King has continued to publish hit novels at an astonishing pace, seamlessly transitioning into modern crime thrillers like The Outsider and the Bill Hodges Trilogy while remaining deeply rooted in the supernatural. From tossing his first manuscript into the trash to surviving life-threatening trauma and building an interconnected literary universe, King’s career stands as a rare, enduring testament to resilience, imagination, and unparalleled storytelling prowess.
