What’s up with this poster for ‘THE SHINING’?

Stanley Kubrick’s masterful Stephen King adaptation, The Shining (1980), is often lauded for its razor-sharp cinematography, chilling atmosphere, and superb performances. What’s less discussed among fans is the film’s bizarre yellow poster that launched the movie’s first release. The brightly coloured design is stamped with the film’s title and a creepy, wide-eyed face peering down at us mere mortals.

What you might not know is that renowned graphic designer Saul Bass was the artist behind the campaign. Youtubers Paper and Light take us on a trip back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Bass and Kubrick hammered through an exhausting series of concepts in search of a single image that captured the soul of the film.
