- What We Do in the Shadows Ends in season 6
- The show was cancelled despite critical acclaim
- The show will arrive in 2024/25
As we bid farewell to What We Do in the Shadows with its sixth and final season this year, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on a series that has brought so much joy, laughter, and a touch of horror to our screens.
Based on the 2014 mockumentary film by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the TV show catapulted us into the hilarious and often absurd lives of vampire housemates in Staten Island. The show’s unique blend of humour and horror has earned it a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim. With standout performances from Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, and Kayvan Novak as vampires Laszlo, Nadja, and Nandor, respectively, Mark Proksch’s hilarious portrayal of the energy vampire Colin Robinson, and the beloved Harvey Guillén as our favourite familiar (and semi vampire hunter) Guillermo, this show’s cast is the reason it has hit such bloody heights.
From Nandor’s endearing cluelessness to Laszlo’s outrageous escapades, and Nadja’s fiery personality, each character has left an indelible mark on the genre. Who could forget Guillermo’s journey from a loyal familiar to a formidable vampire hunter? The series cleverly played with classic vampire tropes while introducing fresh, comedic twists that kept us all hooked.
What We Do in the Shadows also excelled in its guest appearances and cameos, featuring horror icons like Tilda Swinton, Wesley Snipes, and Mark Hamill. These moments not only thrilled fans but also paid homage to the rich history of horror cinema.
But why is this hugely successful show coming to end?
The thirst for blood was tangible from FX Entertainment, as season five and six were quickly commissioned before season four hit our screens. President Nick Grad made a statement at the time.
“There’s a lot of life left in our favourite vampires from Staten Island, and FX couldn’t be more thrilled to commit to two additional seasons of this phenomenal series… What We Do in the Shadows excels on every level, from the brilliant cast and surprising guest stars to the producers, writers, directors and crew. We can’t wait for everyone to enjoy season four, knowing that the next two are on the way.”
And yet , like a steak through then heart, the series was quickly canceled in December 23, with news from Vulture that the series would be wrapped up with season 6.
Whilst there has been no confirmed reason why, many redditors point towards the studios involvement rather than the writers.

Star Harvey Guillén is possible the loudest voice for the show and was quick to talk about the final season and why it’s probably the best time to put the vamps to sleep.
“I mean, it’s sad. We’re all really sad, but I think it’s the perfect amount of time. Think about it. Six seasons is a long time. Altogether, from the pilot until when we end the show, it’ll be about seven years of our lives. Seven years of our lives is a long time to commit to a show that we love.
We give it our best, but then eventually you never want to be on a show that overstays its welcome or a show that becomes like, “Oh, is that still on?” I’m proud to say that none of our seasons have ever made you feel that. If anything, it makes people want more.
I think it’s also a time thing where we’re at in our lives, and the time that we have committed to the show and also the writers, they also have to decide how can we elongate this story, and how long can we go with it without making it, as you would say, jump the shark.
You never want to jump the shark. So, I think we’re really proud of the work that we have done and continue to do, and I think this last season is going to be the cherry on top. People are going to be like, “You know what? Yeah, that’s the way to end this journey.” I’m excited and also sad.
We were just sitting with a cast on set the other day when Kayvan was getting nostalgic about, “Oh my God, I said that in the pilot,” and he was just going down memory lane. It’s just like, we’ve made lifelong friendships – like Kayvan and I have bonded so much, and he is one of my best friends. Literally, he calls to check up on how am I doing, and I go to London, where he and his fiancé cook me dinner. This show has gifted me so many things, and I think the best thing is a lifelong friendship.”
The show has received 21 Emmy Award nominations showing just how well received the vampire comedy was. These include Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series. In 2022, it earned its first win for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes. Additionally, it was awarded Best Comedy Series at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards. With such accolades, it’s seems crazy to be cutting off the golden gooses head. But with many studios re-thinking the future after the writers strike, it may be that FX Entertainment are planning on new shows, rather than old, to push the studio forward.
So, when will the final series arrive? No word just yet, but it is clear that the writers strike has delayed shooting, so either late 2024 or early 2025. In May 204, Guillén shared an emotional montage of behind-the-scenes clips from the set of What We Do in the Shadows, confirming that production had wrapped on the sixth and final season of the hit FX comedy. He said
“Thats a wrap on the final season of What We Do in the Shadows. Thank you to the behind the scenes team, cast and fans for the best 6 years. I will cherish these memories forever. Viva Guillermo!”
As we say goodbye to this iconic series, it’s clear that “What We Do in the Shadows” has carved out its own unique place in the horror-comedy landscape. Its legacy will no doubt inspire future creators to explore the lighter side of the supernatural and hopefully put more Vampire based shows back on the box.
