Texas Chainsaw Massacre Series Announced

Well, horror fans, dust off your skin-masks and fire up your rusty chainsaws, Leatherface is back, and he’s got new owners! After a wild bidding war that probably involved less blood than usual (but who’s to say?), A24 has bagged the rights to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.
However, TCM’s new owners are not just circling another film (There’s allready plenty of those), They’re coming at us with a full-blown series, with Glen Powell wielding executive producer powers. Don’t expect to see him running screaming through the fields, though; his work will be behind the scenes. He’s already declared The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) as one of his all-time favourites.
Directing duties fall to JT Mollner, whose previous film Strange Darling made people afraid of first dates forever, and who managed to adapt a Stephen King tale (The Long Walk) without summoning up legions of unhappy King fans.
“I’m not interested in remaking perfect films—and the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a perfect film. I have so much reverence for Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel because they created something bold, transgressive, and truly seminal that holds up even today as the gold standard for horror. When the idea for a long form exploration into this world came to me, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well to honour and build on the existing folklore. It’s the only way I wanted to do it—and I can’t imagine better partners for this concept than A24. This is truly an honour.”
The TV show will be an intersting new approach to the franchise, but I personally think this is going to be a hard sell. There are many horror franchsie that have stood the tes of time, but none have tried rebooting more than TCM. Apart from the direct sequels; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1995), there have been five reboots.
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
- Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)
- Leatherface (2017)
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022).
None of which made any real progress into pushing TCM beyond a the much loved series from the 80’s and 90’s. And that’s my main concern, over satuation. It’s only been four years since the last attmept at bringin it back. And yet, A24 seem hell bent on making bang for buck and are charging in with a TV series AND another film. Whilst there is no news on the film apart from it’s announcment, it seems that the film and show will NOT be connected…. which leads to just more satuation.
Anyhow, i’m prett sure those film peeps know what they are doing…
On a more positive note, we are getting more Texas Chainsaw Maddness!
