Maniac Cop Remake Talks Rise from the Grave

by Lallen | Jun 2, 2026

The Maniac Cop franchise is fun, twisted and sometimes silly series of films that follow Officer Matthew "Matt" Cordell as he goes bat-shit crazy on the streets of New York. Whilst much loved by fans, the series has faded from shared public zeitgeist mostly thanks to the fact that the last film came out in 1992. It's fair to say that the hard headed Cop is well due for a return in some form or another. And it seems that the Maniac Cop may well return to our screens soon.

According to Deadline, The Neon Demon director Nicolas Winding Refn is primed to push ol' Cordell back onto those steamy Big Apple streets. Refn recently ahd some success at Cannes with his first film in 10 years Her Private Hell, and he was keen to talk about his next project Maniac Cop. Shooting starts in LA this January, which means that film si probably looking for an Autumn release in 2027 (Halloween..is that you?).

It's worthy noting that the franchise has long been in the conversations of many different producers and directors, with the last update (in 2019) was that the project had developed into a TV series with HBO and the French channel Canal+ picking up the film rights. At the time Refn was on board as an executive producer. Whilst that project fell apart in 2023, it seems that it's been resurrected , much like Cordell in Maniac Cop 3, and will now become a new film.

No casting, no story... not much yet to chew on. But stand by as we dig up a few more femurs and we'll ply you with more brokenbones and bloody bodies soon enough.
