Andy Muschietti’s IT Supercut could still happen!

by | Dec 17, 2025

Six years after Pennywise last stalked cinemas, Andy and Barbara Muschietti have confirmed that they’re still not finished with IT (2017) and IT Chapter Two (2019).

With IT: Welcome to Derry hitting its finale on HBO/Sky Atlantic, the sibling filmmakers recently took part in a Reddit AMA. While much of the discussion centred on the new prequel series, one question jumped straight to the top of the pile: whatever happened to Andy Muschietti’s long‑rumoured IT supercut?

The answer will make Losers Club members very happy.

Back in 2019, shortly after IT Chapter Two (2019) hit cinemas, Andy Muschietti revealed his desire to combine both films into a single, massive director’s cut, complete with hours of unused footage. Since then, updates have been scarce – until now.

Responding to fans on Reddit, Muschietti confirmed the project is still very much on his mind:

“Yes, still a big dream of mine. Since we’ve been involved heavily in this show (IT: Welcome to Derry), we hadn’t had time to execute it. Crossing fingers.”

That might not be a green light just yet, but it’s reassuring to know the idea hasn’t been quietly buried in the Barrens.

Both IT (2017) and IT Chapter Two (2019) were massive box-office successes, earning a combined total of over $1.1 billion worldwide. The renewed interest generated by IT: Welcome to Derry, a prequel series exploring Derry, Maine’s cursed history, only strengthens the case for revisiting the films.

The Muschiettis have already talked about a three-season plan for the HBO series, though the show is yet to be officially renewed beyond season one. Warner Bros. is likely waiting to see how the prequel performs before making any big decisions – including approving something as ambitious as a six-hour-plus IT supercut.

If it does happen, this wouldn’t just be a novelty edit. The proposed supercut would merge both films into a single experience, restoring scenes removed from theatrical and home releases. It would reportedly run for over six hours, still shorter than the near eight-hour runtime of IT: Welcome to Derry season one.

There’s also modern relevance. Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair combined Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004) into an extended cut that proved successful through limited screenings. A similar event-style release for IT could be a huge draw for horror fans. Plus, mega-marathon screenings are growing in popularity, with fans braving 7 hour Lord of the Rings Screenings and various other franchise squeezed into a single viewing experince. Just take it easy on the sodas or you’ll be visiting the loo through all the good bits.

The big question on all our chapped lips is “will we ever see IT”? Nothing is confirmed yet, and it may all depend on how Pennywise performs on the small screen. But with the Muschiettis once again deep in the IT mythos, the chances of this monstrous director’s cut finally seeing the light of a projector beam feel better than they have in years.

Until then, we’ll be waiting… floating, if you will.
