We’ve all been eagerly awaiting a modern theatrical release of one of Stephen King’s most beloved books. It seemed the wait was nearly over when writer-director Gary Dauberman, known for his work on IT Part One and Two, took on the task of creating a fresh take on the vampire tale. However, in 2022 things took an unexpected turn when the new film was abruptly removed from the original September 2022 release date, vanishing into the night much like the vampires from King’s story.

Fast forward two years, and we finally have news from the dark powers over at Warner Bros.. with a solid release date of 11th October 2024 for it’s streaming debut over on Max.

Salem’s Lot was King’s second novel, and I personally think it’s one of his best wrtitten noverls, with every page filled with the poetic like stream of consciousness, thought provoking tangents and world building that only King can provide. The story about a small Maine town invaded by vampires, is an important morality tale of tollerance, trauma and neglect, wrapped up in a bloody bow of violence and horror. The tale has twice been turned into a TV mini-series, with Tobe Hooper’s two part show appearing on CBS in 1979, and Mikael Salomonn’s dissapointed 2004 TNT re-imagining, which which switched out the 70’s for a more contempary setting.

Following the enormous success of It in 2016,  Dauberman began advocating for a chance to direct Salem’s Lot for New Line Cinema. “I consider it a crown jewel in King’s collection, and I always believed it would translate well to film,” he says. Dauberman’s pitch was unique: instead of modernising Salem’s Lot, he suggested keeping it set in the nostalgic era of fifty years ago, just as King had originally envisioned it.  “Most of my stuff is set in the ’70s. I love the music. I do love the costumes. I just love the vibe of it,” said Dauberman.

New images have also surfaced, hinting at many of the scenes we will see in the film, including the abduction of Ralphie Glick, the confrontation between Father Callahan and Barlow, and Danny Glick’s undead visit to Mark Petrie.

The new film, starring Lewis Pullman, Bill Camp, Pilou Asbæk, Alfre Woodard & Makenzie Leigh, will be the first feature fillm adaption, even if it sadley will not see a thatrical release. No words on the trailer first spotted at 2022’s CinemaCon, but we are all waiting with baited breath.

Check out the images below form Vanityfair and look out for the film this Halloween.
