Running Man Re-Make Gets Major Update

  • Edgar Wright will adpat the Stephen King novel
  • Glen Powell reveals that the film will be shooting in the fall
  • It will hopefully be more faithful to the book

Glen Powell has spilt the beans on a big update for The Running Man remake! Originally a 1982 novel by Stephen King , the story first hit the big screen in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger battling for survival on a deadly game show.

Fast forward to 2021, and director Edgar Wright announced he’d be giving this classic a fresh spin. Now, in a chat with IndieWire while promoting Twisters, Powell (who will be playing the lead role) let slip that filming for this much-anticipated remake will kick off this autumn.

“I’m going to be shooting The Running Man in the fall,”

Written by King (under the alias Richard Bachman), his dystopian drama was a far cry from the film that director Paul Michael Glaser produced. So much so that King thought hard to have his name removed from the project. In King’s version, The Running Man is a country wide show where the contestant has large  “dead or alive” bounty on his head and anyone, including friends and family, can cash it in. The story is far more nuanced that this short description, but it’s fair to say that Schwarzenegger action packed sci-fi only used a rough outline of the novels plot.

Back in December 2023, Wright spoke to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, spreading some light on his plans for the new film.

Why is that interesting to me? It’s like, I like the film but I like the book more, and they didn’t really adapt the book. Even as a teenager when I saw the Schwarzenegger film I was like, ‘Oh, this isn’t like the book at all!’”

Whether or not the new film will follow the novel faithfully is hard to say, but I’m sure we’ll be getting more news on this soon, as shooting starts at the end of the year.
