Prepare yourself for Werewolves, the latest creature-based horror sensation, featuring Frank Grillo. This upcoming furfest film tells the story of two scientists racing against time to halt a mutation that turns people into werewolves a year after they encounter a super-moon. Directed by Steven C. Miller and penned by Matthew Kennedy, the movie boasts an impressive cast including Grillo, Katrina Law & Ilfenesh Hadera.
In a candid interview with Screen Rant, Grillo discusses why the movie had to be scaled back from its original vision. Reflecting on the script, Grillo shares his initial reaction with the director: “Brother, this is The Purge meets werewolves.” The intense violence initially scripted led the team to “kind of tone it down.” Here’s Grillo’s full statement:
“Yeah, I keep saying it, I read the script, I immediately called him, and I was like, ‘Brother, this is The Purge meets werewolves.’ I said, specifically, Anarchy, it feels like Anarchy meets werewolves. And we’ve said it a few times, we had to kind of tone it down. We had to tweak the script a bit so it wasn’t too much like Purge, but that’s how I described the film, because I know how many people love those Purge movies, specifically Anarchy and Election. If you like those movies, you’ll love this movie. It’s got all of that, plus werewolves, and that’s it. That’s what attracted me to it. I know this world, I know how to do this.”
Grillo’s presence here in Werewolves is probably not by chance, but rather through the production team chasing him up, after his breakout role in The Purge: Anarchy (2014). How much the film will stand up to this description of it be “Purge” like, is much up to debate, but all answers will come when the film hits cinemas this Friday, December 6th.
Howlling fun I’m sure.
