James Wan & Leigh Whannell Tease Return of Jigsaw

Break out your hacksaws and dust off your bear traps… there’s life in the old corpse yet! The Saw franchise is sliding under the rusty razor of Blumhouse, who’ve dragged creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell back for the upcoming eleventh chapter.
If you thought the series was dead and buried after Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), think again.
The duo made a bloody splash at this week’s Sundance Film Festival, where they attended a special legacy screening of their breakout hit, Saw (2004), and winked at fans about possibly returning to direct. The rumour mill is grinding away, but nothing’s confirmed… just yet!
While in Park City, Wan and Whannell chatted with Matt Donato from Bloody Disgusting about what’s next for this not-so-deadly franchise. The big question: is Jigsaw back, or are we getting another bloody detour?
Put your mind at ease—Wan isn’t about to ditch the puppet master. He put it simply:
“It’s definitely not Spiral, it’s not Spiral. And I still blame Leigh for killing off Jigsaw, because it’s fucking hard to try and make any future Saw movies without Jigsaw.”
Whannell, ever the voice of reason (sort of), chimed in:
“He did have cancer, by the way.”
Nice save, Leigh.
Wan continued:
“Leigh and I, we’re not going to give too much away, but we don’t think you can make a Saw movie without Jigsaw. That’s the bottom line. And ultimately, we want to hark back to the spirit of what Leigh and I love about the original first movie. The original first movie, which is Jigsaw’s philosophy and what makes him tick.
Ultimately, he’s a scary guy in the first one, and we want to go back to making a scary Saw movie again, with this omnipresent thing that Jigsaw had in the first film.
Definitely we want to give the fans what they love about the whole franchise as well, whilst I think it’s very important we want to do something new and fresh that hasn’t been done before. That’s the sale. That’s my pitch.”
So there you have it: expect a fresh chapter that digs back into what made Saw (2004) so damn terrifying in the first place… Jigsaw, his twisted games, and plenty of new surprises.
Saw X (2023) was a hugely celebrated chapter, but acted as a prequel between the first film and it’s sequel Saw II (2005). Being a prequel, it was easy to bring back John Kramer (AKA Jigsaw). What the plans are for the next chapter is still very much unknown.
We’re keeping our pig masks ready and our eyes peeled for more updates from Wan and Whannell. Stay tuned for further coverage, because you know we want to play a game!!!
