We like to think fear comes from not knowing, but I’m not sure that’s true. Don’t get me wrong, not knowing is uncomfortable. It makes you check the lock twice, look over your shoulder, or stare a little too long at the shape at the end of the street. 

But certainty is when the real trouble starts. When a shadow stops being a shadow, the noise in the wall becomes a message, or the stranger standing across the street is no longer waiting for a bus. They’re waiting for you. 

Nothing outside necessarily changed but you did. That’s horror. I’ve always been more interested in that moment than when whatever comes crashing through the door afterward. Give me a vampire and I know the basic rules: garlic, sunlight, wooden stake. But give me an ordinary person in an ordinary coat standing somewhere he has every legal right to stand, and let me become absolutely certain he is watching me? Now we have a problem. 

Because once the human mind decides something means something, it is remarkably good at hiring witnesses. A pen clicks, a person looks away too quickly, the elevator stops on the wrong floor, or your neighbor knocks on the wall at 12:19 in the morning. 

Individually, these things are more than likely nothing. Put them together in the right order and suddenly you have architecture. Hallways, doors, A whole damn haunted house built out of evidence that may or may not belong together. 

That idea sits at the center of the kind of horror I love writing. In Anna So Knows ’Ya, John Simons is a crime reporter. His entire professional life depends on noticing what other people miss. He gathers facts, finds patterns, asks questions, and turns chaos into a story someone else can understand. 

That sounds like an excellent survival skill. Until he’s scared. Then the same machinery can become terrifying, because a monster you doubt still has to convince you, whereas a monster you are certain about gets a key and moves right in. 

To me, that’s what makes grounded horror so much more unsettling than something safely supernatural. A ghost gives us distance; a werewolf gives us time. We leave the theater and remind ourselves that the thing with the backwards head probably isn’t waiting beside the Honda. 

But ordinary perception comes home with us. We all know what it feels like to misread a glance or to hear a noise downstairs and suddenly remember every home-invasion story we’ve ever encountered. Usually, morning arrives and restores the furniture to its proper dimensions. Usually. True horror lives inside those last seven letters.  

When I write, I don’t want the reader standing safely outside the haunted house yelling, “Don’t go in there!” I want them already inside because the hallway looked reasonable. Every door should make sense, so they walk forward because, given everything they believe at that exact moment, walking forward seems like the only intelligent thing to do. 

That’s the frightening part. It’s not stupidity or recklessness, it’s logic. Horror gets particularly nasty when the wrong conclusion can be reached through a series of perfectly understandable steps. 

By then, the monster doesn’t need claws. It has your certainty and that’s something much more useful. And once certainty locks the door behind you, finding the way back out can be a hell of a lot harder than getting in.
