John Carpenter Really Wants A Sequel to ‘The Thing’

by | Feb 22, 2022

Legendary filmmaker John Carpenter reveals his desire to follow up his 1982 sci-fi horror classic The Thing with a sequel that would continue the story of the original.

The original sci-fi Horror failed to make much of a splash when if first hit cinemas back in 1982, but the years following, helped by the VHS boom, saw the film grow from a cult into a classic very quickly. For years, fans have wondered about the fate of the last surviving members of U.S. Outpost 31, and it seems that Carpenter has too.

The alien invasion film saw a shapeshifting creature quickly take over the American research station, leaving only MacReady and Childs left alive. The big question was what happens next, with many surmising that Childs could be the Thing. However, the Thing never really got a proper sequel, unlike many of Carpenter’s other creations. To an extent, a video game answered these questions, showing MacReady surviving the creatures tentacle grasps. A prequel film, The Thing (2011), told the story of what happened before the events of the original, but never touched upon any other elements of the franchise. as for a live action answer…we have never had one!

The possibility of a new Thing project has floated around for some time, with Blumhouse and Universal Studios recently discussing what they could do with the franchise. Speaking with THR, Carpenter reveal’s that he would love to see a continuation of the original.

I would like to do a sequel to The Thing, or a continuation, something like that. But I don’t know. See? There are a lot of things in this world I don’t know.

However, it’s important to remember that the studio has only announced that they are working on an adaption of the novel “Who Goes There?”, which was the source material for both the 1951 shocker The Thing from Another World and Carpenters The Thing. It’s also worth mentioning that in 2018 it was discovered that Who Goes There? was actually a shortened version of a larger novel previously written by author John W. Campbell Jr. It’s very possible that it is this that they studio are considering adapting.

What ever direction the studios take this film, it does look like Carpenter will be onboard in some capacity, even if he “can’t talk about it“.

More news on this as it grows on the back of your spine….
