Kiefer Sutherland Recalls Eating a Man’s Head in ‘Lost Boys’!

Deleted scenes are part and parcel of the filmmaking process, with directors and producers under pressure to trim film run times and maybe even cut some of violence. It’s always great to see some of the scenes restored for DVD/BluRay releases so we can make judgement on how it’s including could have changed the film. But sometimes, we have to face up to the fact that we may never see some of the cut scenes, and rely only on word of mouth, or glimpses of missing scenes in trailers. We may never see the alternate fake psychic death from the 1989 Warlock or Chris Cooper’s bookends to 2002s The Ring remake, and it seems like there is one more to add to list of scenes lost in time. 

Chatting with Yahoo this week, Kiefer Sutherland spoke about Joel Schumacher’s 1987 vampire classic The Lost Boys, and it was here, next to an apology for the mullet, that he revealed a bloody and violent scene that was cut from the final film. 

“There was a scene that actually didn’t make the movie that I was really, really excited about, mainly because it was just so violent I couldn’t believe that we were doing it…

…It’s sort of in the movie — they cut around it — but there was a guy on a beach and he was bald and they had made a prosthetic cast of his head. And the part of the scene that I loved the most was literally, it was like a cake: I ate the whole back of his head off and blood just went everywhere. I had been directed to just smile like a child having cake, and the two images were so frightening and scary.”

Whilst it’s possible that a small clip of these scene appears in the final cut (video below), it’s doubtful that we will ever get to see this gory scene. Whilst there has been plenty of cut scenes provided on DVD and BluRay over the years, such as Kelly Jo Minter’s cut character, nothing of the head eating scene has been spotted in the thirty years since the films release.
