Robert Eggers to Scare up Fair Verona for Romeo & Juliet

Are you ready to head back to fair verona?

Focus Features has won a major bidding war to develop a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with Robert Eggers reportedly set to direct and produce.

Lets face it, there has been dozens of direct film adaptations and hundreds of inspired retellings of William Shakespeare’s classic tale of star crossed lovers, family fueds and tradgic deaths. Is it now time for a horror edged tale?

Eggers has made his name through meticulously researched period films with a taste for dread, isolation and terror, having directed films such as The Witch (2015), The Northman (2022) and Nosferatu (2024). His next big film Werwulf (2026) 14th-century werewolf film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe, and is scheduled to open in cinemas on Christmas Day. 

The new film was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and later confirmed by Deadline, but being such an early update, there's no real news apart from this announcemnet.

Above all else, Romeo and Juliet is a story about young love, so we expect this new adaption to be a beautifully dark emotional tale, set against Eggers unique style. This is one to look out for.
