Resident Evil hits franchise-best $60 million premiere

Zach Cregger will be celebrating this week, as his latest film, an adaption of video game Resident Evil makes huge waves in the weekend box office. The Weapons and Babarian director set his eyes on Racoon City for his next film, which paid off with a massive $60 million haul. Other films in the long runnig franhcise only ever pulled in around $20 million, with Resident Evil (2002) only hitting $17.7M on it's opening weekend, going on to make a total of $103.8M. 

Despite the big hual, fans of the games may be dissapaointed as Cregger has NOT based his film on any video game. The film does not include any of the games charcaters nor will you see any of the earlier games classic big bads. More shockingly, the direct has NEVER seen any of the films and it's still unclear if he has even played any of the games. Is this a TRUE Resident Evil Game...not realy. This is a strange bait and switch film which may very well be a very entertaining venture, but falls short of being true to what fans wanted.

 Cregger’s is a reliable horror helmer, and his name alone will pull in bums on seats, add to that the Resident Evil fans, it's easy to see why the film is doing well with the numbers. But the next week will see if word of mouth will carry if further. At the moment reviews are highly polirized, with one side praising how the film feels like a video game, but others are all screaming "where is the lore?" Fans have expressed disappointment over the complete absence of legacy heroes (like Leon, Claire, or Jill) and iconic locations like the Raccoon Police Department (RPD) or the Spencer Mansion.

Cregger has openly admitted he "was not prepared" for the sudden fan backlash, clarifying in interviews that his intention was never a 1:1 translation, but rather a standalone story that captures the emotional panic of the games.

Resdient Evil is out in Cinemas now.
