Crystal Lake (2026) trailer unveils a blood-soaked new chapter in the Jason Voorhees story

A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series arrives on Peacock on 15 October 2026

The first full trailer for Crystal Lake (2026) has arrived, offering fans their most substantial look yet at the new television prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise.

Produced by A24 for Peacock, the eight-part drama shifts the focus away from the hockey-masked killer and towards his mother, Pamela Voorhees. Played by Linda Cardellini, Pamela is presented as a grieving single mother whose life begins to unravel after the death of her young son, Jason.

According to the official synopsis, Jason drowned in Crystal Lake almost a year before the events of the series. When two strangers arrive at Pamela’s home and begin investigating her past, their questions trigger a disturbing chain of events. Before long, the residents of Crystal Lake are forced to ask a terrifying question: who is Pamela Voorhees?

A new timeline for the Voorhees family

The series is set in 1972, eight years before the events of Friday the 13th (1980). Jason’s drowning takes place during the summer of 1971, marking a significant change to the timeline traditionally associated with the franchise.

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has described the series as a character-driven story about Pamela’s relationship with Jason and the psychological damage caused by his death. In the series, Pamela works as a cook at Camp Crystal Lake, while 11-year-old Jason attends camp despite his physical limitations.

The trailer shows Jason before the familiar hockey mask, with glimpses of the child at camp and scenes suggesting that his story may take an unexpected turn. It also includes imagery that has prompted speculation about a secretive research facility and possible experiments connected to the Voorhees family.

Whether the series is introducing a science-fiction explanation for Jason’s condition remains unclear. The trailer offers only hints, leaving viewers to decide whether the facility represents a genuine conspiracy, a distorted memory or another of Crystal Lake’s many grim secrets.

Pamela Voorhees takes centre stage

Unlike the films, where Pamela’s identity as the killer is revealed late in Friday the 13th (1980), Crystal Lake (2026) begins much closer to the source of her rage.

The series will explore Pamela’s grief, her fierce devotion to Jason and the gradual collapse of her relationship with the town around her. Kane has also promised that the show will feature familiar locations, returning characters and numerous references to the original films.

Several characters associated with the first movie are expected to appear, including Ralph, Officer Dorf, Rita and Claudette. The wider town is intended to play a major role in the story, giving viewers a closer look at the people who live around the infamous lake before its name became shorthand for a very bad weekend away.

Callum Vinson plays young Jason Voorhees, while William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins and Gwendolyn Sundstrom lead the supporting cast. The recurring cast includes Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch and Phoenix Parnevik.

Practical gore and familiar echoes

The trailer promises a mixture of psychological drama, period thriller and traditional slasher horror. Kane has indicated that the series will retain the franchise’s appetite for inventive deaths, with practical effects playing a major role.

The production also filmed in Blairstown, the New Jersey location used for the original Friday the 13th (1980). Fans should expect recognisable settings, visual references and Easter eggs, although the new series is designed to work as more than a nostalgia trip.

The opening titles reportedly pay tribute to the original films, while composer Harry Manfredini, who scored the first Friday the 13th (1980), has created new music for the series.

Although Jason will appear, Kane has confirmed that viewers should not expect the familiar hockey mask at this stage of the story. That does not mean the series will avoid Jason’s more recognisable imagery entirely. The trailer suggests that the show may gradually move towards the figure audiences know from the films.

Release date and episode details

All eight episodes of Crystal Lake (2026) will premiere on Peacock on Thursday, 15 October 2026. Each episode will run for approximately 60 minutes.

The series is created, written and produced by Brad Caleb Kane, known for It: Welcome to Derry (2025), Tokyo Vice (2022–2024) and Warrior (2019–2023).

Directors include Michael Lennox, Celine Held, Logan George and Quyen Tran. Executive producers include Marc Toberoff, Victor Miller, Robert M. Barsamian, Stuart Manashil, Tyson Bidner, Michael Lennox and Roy Lee.

For fans who have spent nearly two decades waiting for Jason’s return to television, the trailer suggests that Crystal Lake (2026) is not simply repeating the original formula. It is going back to the beginning—but, judging by the blood already on the floor, the lake has not become any safer.

Crystal Lake (2026) premieres on Peacock on 15 October 2026.
