Edge of Tomorrow 2 Director Update
Edge of tomorrow is one of those rare film gems that did better off the big screen than it did on. Through word of mouth and changing publicity, the film managed to build quite a huge following, enough so that a sequel is now in the works. The film, starring Tom Cruise as a cowdley public affairs officer and Emily Blunt as a badass soldier, is a crossover of an alien invasion film and beloved time travel film ‘Groundhog Day’, as Cruise’s character finds himself living the same day over and over in the middle of an intergalactic battlefield.
“Tom and Emily [Blunt] and I are really excited to go do it.”
Based on a manga called ‘All You Need Is Kill’ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the film failed to make big numbers in at the box office, but it was through Blu-Ray sales which the film picked up popularity. Thanks partly to the films name being re-branded in the states to “Live. Die. Repeat.” which was the films original tagline, and was more prominent on the films posters and less confusing for consumers.
Doug Liman has been talking about a sequel for sometime now, and he dropped some news in an interview on collider.
“Tom and Emily [Blunt] and I are really excited to go do it. We have a script. We’re just trying to find a time to schedule it, between my schedule and Emily’s and Tom’s. But it’s one of these things where it’s a sequel whose origins come from the best possible place, which is, it’s not a studio saying, ‘Hey, we think we can make some more money. Let’s just stamp out another one.’ This sequel originated with fans of the original film who continually came up to Tom and myself and Emily and told us how much they loved the movie and would we ever consider a sequel. And enough people said that to me and to Tom and to Emily that we finally sat down and said, ‘What would a sequel even look like?’ We ended up with Chris McQuarrie coming up with a great story.”
As Liman mentions, the original cast are all very happy to return to the film, and it’s not through some studio obligation, or favour, but because they care so much about the characters they created. And as for story, the film barely included the original books story line (no spoilers but it’s epic!) which would make an amazing film if they choose to adapt it.
“It really comes from the heart. And by the way, I never worked with Tom on one of these giant tent-pole movies, so I don’t … Everything I’ve ever seen him do or worked with him on comes from the heart in the most pure place. I mean, he is always thinking about his fans. He’s always thinking about the audience. He’s not one of these movie stars that thinks he’s an anointed movie star. He genuinely understands that he’s a movie star because people like his movies. And he wants to deliver for those people.”
Edge of Tomorrow 2 is happening, it just comes down to scheduling everyone in. Liman is about to start shooting on his adaptation of ‘Chaos Walking’ and cruise has two films lined up, ‘Mission Impossible 6’ and ‘Top Gun 2’, but i’m sure he’ll find time for more sequel somewhere in that mix?
Patience sci-fi fans…it’s coming…
