‘Donnie Darko’ Director Wants Third Cut of Film

by Lallen | Oct 3, 2026

George Lucas did it, Ridley Scott had a go and now it seems Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly is at it as well, as he eyes a third version of his time bending cult classic.

Chatting with fans on a recent Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), Kelly spoke about how his upcomign sequel novel "Donnie Darko: The Philosophy of Time Travel", chnages enough stuff to warrent a new cut of the film. Much Like Star wars and Blade Runner, Kelly wants another stab at re-editing his film with a nother version to sit besides the Theatrical and Directors cut.

Following the films premier at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, it became critically acclaimed, but fell flat on it's face with it's box office release. Donnie Darko flew out of the traps, but its release faced a series of hurdles rather than a smooth path. Instead, the film found love following it's DVD release, where word of mouth quickly spread the good word and the studio allowed Kelly to release a Directors Cut, in order to capitlise on the films popularity.

Now, the director eyes a third cut to to line up better with his new book.

"I am not satisified with either version, honestly. The DC was meant to lay the groundwork for the much bigger universe explored in my sequel. If there is a third version of the film it would lean closer to the TC now that I have written the sequel novel..."

The film is back in Cinemas (out 2nd Oct) and the book is out December 15th 2026. Whether or not a new version will emrge is yet to be seen, but be sure that if the new novel turns into a film, we'll be gettng sweeping changes, with a new release, to align. This certinaly seems to be the in-thing to do right now, as Avengers Endgame: Encore is doing just that, released to cinema with new scenes to fit into the new Doomsday story line.
