First Look at Mike Flanagan’s ‘Exorcist’ Sequel

The Exorcist exists in the world of horror as the pinacle of genre film. Whether your a fan of subliminal messages, spinning heads or projectile pea soup, the film has perminantly wedged it's self into the public consciousness and refuses to budge. Since the 1973 release, there has been five sequels, all of which failed to re-capture the horror of Regan MacNeil's possion. They do keep trying though, and stepping up to the pee stained line on the floor is Mike Flanagan, who hopes to finally break the franchise medium with a new film produced by Blumhouse–Atomic Monster.
The upcoming seventh movie in the franchise, The Exorcist: Martyrs, stars Scarlett Johansson, Laurence Fishburne and Chiwetel Ejiofor in a film that Flanagan calls "viciously dark". OOOh I just got CHILLS!
Chatting with Filmspeak he breifly spoke about what to expect with his upcoming new film..
"It's viciously dark... It's unsafely dark at times, and we went places in there that I've never, never gone on any of my sets emotionally. But I have to say that at the end of it, we found some light and some hope in it that I'm really grateful for because it's a harrowing story."
Whilst most directors would say the same thing about thier own dark horror films, Flanagan actauully has a a really high hit record, with films such as Oculus (2013), Hush (2016) and Doctor Sleep (2019), along side his epic TV offerings such as The Haunting of Hill House (2018) , Midnight Mass (2021) and his current tv show Carrie (2026), if this man cries wolf, you head out with a shotgun and silver bullets.
Whilst we know very little right now about Martyrs, apart from the plot, an official X channel (is X still a thing these days?) with the very first look at the terror that awaits us on 12th March 2027.

The film follows Johansson as Julie Miller, an NYPD homicide detective and single mother.Thirteen years earlier, Julie takes down a notorious Satanic serial killer named Father Sunday (played by John Leguizamo .. OMG), When a fresh and gruesome string of murders hits her desk, sparked or complicated by the execution of Father Sunday, Julie’s investigation pulls her deep into supernatural terror. The demonic force eventually targets her 12-year-old son, as well as her mother (played by Diane Lane) and it's up to Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a priest experiencing a crisis of faith, to save the day. Huzzah....
So... get ready for somethign special next year... may the power of pea soup compell you!
