Michael Rooker’s Terrifying Masterpiece: ‘Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer’ Turns 40

by Hilly Horror | Oct 6, 2026

Forget space outlaws and shuffling walkers for a second. Before Michael Rooker was blue or dodging zombies, he was busy delivering one of the most skin-crawling, soul-chilling performances in horror history.

Forty years after it first arrived to shock, offend, and permanently scar the censors, John McNaughton's masterclass in dread, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, is back from the dead. Dark Sky Selects is celebrating the film's 40th anniversary with a gorgeous, brand-new 4K restoration from the original 16mm camera negative.

If you want to test your stomach on the big screen, Regal Cinemas is bringing Henry back nationwide for a one-night-only theatrical screening on October 14 as part of their 31 Screams on Screen series.

For those who prefer to cower safely in their living rooms, the definitive Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Steelcase drops on October 27, complete with Dolby Vision HDR and a treasure trove of special features. That includes everything from retrospective documentaries and MPAA war stories to deep dives into the film's notorious censorship battles.

Want to take your horror obsession a step further? Dark Sky has teamed up with cult apparel brand Rucking Fotten for an exclusive merch drop. You can pre-order custom bundles featuring a killer new T-shirt paired with the 4K Steelcase, or go full analog horror collector by grabbing the bundle that tosses in an exclusive retro VHS copy as well. Just make sure to lock those orders in now and upto October 9th before they vanish into the dark.
