Courteney Cox Wants To Direct Scream 8

Gale Weathers may be ready to trade her microphone for a director’s megaphone

After nearly three decades of surviving Ghostface attacks, exposing killers and delivering some of the franchise’s sharpest one-liners, Courteney Cox has suggested that she could be the perfect person to direct the next Scream film. While promoting her new true-crime feature Evil Genius (2026) at the Toronto International Film Festival, Cox told Deadline that she would be interested in stepping behind the camera for Scream 8.

“I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do... I mean, and the creator, and Wes Craven, and the writers, and everybody who’s been in it. But I think it’d be great and fun and a good publicity thing. Get on it.”

Cox has appeared in every Scream film, beginning with Wes Craven’s original Scream (1996). Her character, ambitious reporter Gale Weathers, has evolved from ruthless tabloid journalist to one of the franchise’s most reliable survivors. Across seven films, Cox has worked with Craven, series creator Kevin Williamson, the writers of the later sequels and almost every major character to cross paths with Ghostface.

Cox has not been officially offered the job, but she already has directing experience. Her credits include Just Before I Go (2014), episodes of Cougar Town and her latest feature, Evil Genius (2026), starring Patricia Arquette and David Harbour.

The eighth film is in development at Spyglass, with Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman writing the screenplay. Kevin Williamson, who directed Scream 7 (2026), has suggested he may step away from directing the next instalment.

Isabel May, who played Tatum Evans, Sidney Prescott’s daughter, in Scream 7 (2026), has also teased that she knows a little about the story being discussed. She hopes the next film explores Tatum’s life after Ghostface and the pressure of growing up in Sidney’s shadow.

With Cox interested in directing and May keen to return, Scream 8 already has plenty of familiar faces attached to its future. Now fans just need Spyglass to make the call...  before Gale publishes the story herself.
