Blair Witch Returns: Original Stars Rejoin Blumhouse Reboot

Nearly three decades ago, The Blair Witch Project (1999) crept out of nowhere and permanently rewired modern horror. Made for next to nothing and marketed with ruthless ingenuity, it convinced a shocking number of cinemagoers that what they were watching might actually be real. Missing posters, faux police reports and early internet myth‑building turned a grainy found‑footage experiment into a cultural event, effectively inventing the found‑footage boom and influencing everything from Paranormal Activity (2007) to REC (2007). Love it or hate it, the film’s impact on horror is undeniable, and now Lionsgate and Blumhouse are preparing to reopen the woods.
Lionsgate has officially announced the creative team and cast for Blumhouse’s upcoming reboot of The Blair Witch Project, confirming that Dylan Clark will direct and rewrite the screenplay after an initial draft by Chris Thomas Devlin. In a move that will please long‑time fans, original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams are returning, both appearing in the film and serving as executive producers. The pair famously played versions of themselves in the 1999 original, a casting choice that helped blur the line between fiction and reality and fuelled the film’s unsettling authenticity.
Original filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale are also involved as executive producers, alongside producers including Jason Blum and James Wan, bringing key figures from the franchise’s past and present together for this new iteration. The project is still in early development and has no release date yet, but with original cast and creators now back in the fold, this reboot appears to be aiming for something more considered than a simple retread, attempting to tap into what made the Blair Witch myth so unsettling in the first place.
