Mike Flanagan to Remake Stephen King’s ‘The Mist’

by | Feb 11, 2026

Mike Flanagan certainly is one of Horror’s finest directors, having tackled such crazily diverse stories such as killer mirrors, haunted hosues and vampire infested islands. I think it’s easy to say that he’s a fan favorite amoungts horror fans. However, his next project may be his most polarizing, as he signs up to tackle a remake of Stephen King’s The Mist.

Flanagan is no stranger to King’s work, he directed Gerald’s Game (2017), Doctor Sleep (2019) and The Life of Chuck (2024); and lest face it, Midnight Mass (2021) was basically Salem’s Lot. So many ghouls and goblins will be super excited about the director teaming back up with King. It’s just that… do we really need a reamke of The Mist?

Frank Darabont directed the 2007 adapation, and it’s pretty widely appreciated as been a damned fine film, sitting a respectable 74% fresh on rotten tomatoes. If any one knows King’s work better , it’s Darabont, who has KILLED just about every King adaption he has got his greasy little paws on (The Shawshank Redemption (1994) & The Green Mile (1999). Can Flanagan out-do Darabont? The film featured Thomas Jane as a man trapped insde a supermarket as a strange mist rolls over a sleepy little town.

It’s worth also mentiong the failed TV series produced by Dimension Television, which aired for one 10-episode season on Spike from June 22 to August 24, 2017. It failed to garner much interest and was canned shortly after it’s first season.

Anyhow, the news direct form Deadline goes as thus:

Warner Bros is reuniting frequent collaborators Mike Flanagan and Stephen King on a new adaptation of The Mist, based on King’s acclaimed 1980 novella.

Flanagan will direct and write the screenplay. He will produce through Red Room alongside Tyler Thompson and Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone. Alexandra Magistro will also executive produce for Red Room.

It’s super early days, so we have little to go on, but certainly some fans are a little confused on why The Mist needs another film,a dn not an adaption of some of King’s other work.

We do not need a new movie of The Mist.
The Mist is perfect.

I love Flanagan’s work and will always be happy to see him tackling King, but no one needs a third adaptation of THE MIST.

I am excited about more King and Flanagan, I just wished it was on a NEW project, maybe one of King’s many many many unmade books and short stories. The Talisman, Eyes of the dragon, RevivalFrom a buck 8, Joyland, Fairy tale, Billy summers, The Regulators, ect ect ect…
