Actors Covered in Blood – 10 Films That Got Messy

When Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell were raising money for The Evil Dead, an old distributor told them “I’m gonna give you guys a piece of advice. If it’s a horror movie, you’ve gotta keep the blood running down the screen. You’ve gotta have blood, if it’s a horror movie, and a lot of it.”. Well, that’s exactly what they did. They splattered gore across actors, walls and lenses.

Horror has a rich history of gore, with many films providing more blood and guts than you could wave a crazed axe at. And some films cover their stars in so much gore, that it’s beyond horrifying. The Descent (2005)

Neil Marshall’s adventure horror film The Descent sets a bunch of wannabe Lara Crofts on a spelunking weekend in a deep and unexplored cave system. When the thrill-seekers discover a race of cave-dwelling humanoids, things get a little messy. Whilst escaping from these “Crawlers” Protagonist Sarah Carter (Shauna Macdonald) finds herself plunged into blood-filled pond emerging covered in blood.

The Night Flier (1997)

Based on a short Story by Stephen King, The Night Flier sees Richard Dees (Miguel Ferrer), a cynical tabloid reporter, tracking down a sinister serial killer who leaves his victims drained of blood and flies around in a black plane. Tracking down the killer to a small airport in South Carolina, he discovers that the killer is a vampire, and that he has massacred the entire building. Forced to drink some of the vampire’s blood, Dees has visions of all the victims coming back as zombies. In a trance, he attacks the bodies with an axe, which is how the police discover him, covered in blood, hacking at the dead bodies.

Hollow Man (2000)

Paul Verhoeven’s version of the Invisible man story, Hollow Man, takes keen scientist Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon) and turns him in to a murderous mad man willing to kill to keep his invisible powers. Scientist Sarah Kennedy (Kim Dickens) get her hands dirty when she tries to corner Sebastian in the lab. She breaks open blood bags and sprays them across the room, one successful shot covers the invisible Sebastian in torrent of plasma.

The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, based on the novel by Stephen King, features a due of chilling specters that have become a major factor in the films terrifying vision. Whilst the Grady family is mentioned in the novel, the Twins were plucked from the mind of Kubrick and their bloody corpses, seen in one of Danny’s visions, is chilling statement to the hotel’s dark history.

Evil Dead (2013)

The Evil Dead franchise is filled with blood drenching moments, with the films chucking so much blood at its cast, it even has it running down the camera lens, bathing the audience in visceral. Whilst actor Bruce Campbell had his fair share of bloody moments, we turn to the 2013 remake for the bloodiest. Survivor Mia (Jane Levy) faces of with the Taker of Souls during a chainsaw battle in pouring bloody rain.

Dead Alive (1992)

Peter Jackson’s horror comedy Dead Alive/Brain Dead may not officially be the bloodies movie ever made (Evil Dead 2013 pinched them at the post) it certainly feels like it, as the entire film is just one disgustingly bloody moment after the other. One scene see’s protagonist Lionel Cosgrove (Timothy Balme) covered from head to toe in gore, as he attacks a household of zombies with a gas powered lawn mower.

Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995)

Mel Brooks’ hilarious take on Dracula sees Leslie Nielsen wrap his fangs around the prince of darkness. The films campy humour and quotable dialogue makes this film one hell of a funny film. However, it’s not a squeaky clean, as actor Steven Weber discovered when one scene doused him in the red stuff. Jonathan Harker (Weber) discovers that his recently deceased friend, Lucy, has become a vampire, and with the help of Professor Van Helsing (Brooks), he plunges a stake through her heart. Each blow of the hammer results in a geyser of blood that coats him and everything in the room. When Helsing points out that Lucy is not quite dead, Harker responds “she’s dead enough!”

Carrie (1976)

Brian De Palma’s epic adaption of Stephen King’s debut novel, Carrie, is synonymous with the films climax, which see’s troubled Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), bullied and humiliated by her high school peers. Pigs blood is poured on top of the poor girl, whilst she accepts the Prom Queen title on stage. In a fit of rage, Carries telekinesis seals the room and burns everyone in the building alive, leaving Carrie to walk out of the burning building covered head to toe in blood.

Hostel: Part II (2007)

Eli Roth’s follow up to his successful torture porn thriller Hostel features a trio of American art students, who become victims of the Elite Hunting club in Slovakia. Like the other Hostels films, Part II never holds back on the gore, with one scene being a blood drenched nightmare. Student Lorna (Heather Matarazzo) is kidnapped and wakes to find herself naked and hung upside down above a bathtub. A woman enters the room, strips naked and lies down in the empty bath. She slashes at the hanging girl with a sharp scythe and collects the dripping blood in the tub. As Lorna screams in pain and distress, the woman opens up the girl’s throats and baths in the gushing blood that pours over her.

It Chapter Two (2019)

Another Stephen King adaption here, as the remake of IT gets down and dirty for our list. Andrés Muschietti’s film adaption of King’s novels certainly tales liberties when it comes to the story, with two scenes from the series covering their actors in gore. Whilst Young Beverly Marsh does get a nasty surprise from her bathroom sink in the novel, in the film adaptation, a torrent of blood explodes from the drain, covering actress Sophia Lillis in a shocking amount of claret. However, the stakes are raised further in It Chapter Two, where a now adult Beverly Marsh (Jessica Chastain) finds herself in a nightmarish hallucination where she is trapped in a toilet cubicle as it fills with blood. Beverley is consumed by the incoming gore and barely escapes with her own life.
