Candyman Trailer Reveals All!
Anthony McCoy
The name might not ring any bells but his mother, Anne Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams returning to the role) just might. Yep, our new protagonist/antagonist is none other than the little screaming baby Candyman stole in the first film, Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). Surviving Daniel Robitaille’s (Candyman) wrath as one of his victims, the young babe grew up and moved away from the projects of Cabrini–Green, but something has called him back! As he says “I feel really connected to this neighborhood!”. Much like Helen Lyle, it looks like Anthony has been chosen to be Candyman’s victim, destined to kill in his name.
Cabrini–Green
The 1992 original Bernard Rose film transported the events of Clive Barker’s chilling book from Liverpool (most of Barker’s work is set in England) to Cabrini-Green in Chicago. Cabrini–Green was a real life public housing project located on the Near North Side of Chicago. Much of the development has Undergone major redevelopment since the late 1990s, resulting in a combination of upscale high-rise buildings and row houses, but many of the tower blocks, such as the one from Candyman, have since been torn down and redeveloped. The now gentrified area, is still the key location for the film.
Helen Lyle
Yep, Helen Lyle will be returning in some form in the new film, according to IMDB. Helen managed to defeat Candyman but in doing so, become a vengeful spirit of her own. Cassie Kramer is stepping into Helen’s shoes this time around, so it might be a very small role as a flashback, or haunting presence that tries to wrestle Anthony back from the Candyman’s grasp.
Candyman
Whilst the trailer has not answered this key question, what is for sure is that Tony Todd will be returning to play Daniel Robitaille. Whether we will ever see him as the Candyman, or if his role is just a flashback to when he was alive, we’ll have to wait and see. What is clear is that the creepy voice that stands in for the Candyman through out the trailer is not that of Todd. This could be just another way of throwing us off the trial, or a hint that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be voicing and appearing as the new hooked menace.
Candyman is the bloody story of an urban legend that comes to life. It tells the tale of a slave who was brutally murdered and who returns when you say his name five times in a mirror. There has so far been three films in teh franchise with the 2020 film being the fourth in the franchise. Much Like Robert Englund in The NIghtmare on Elms Street Films, Tony Todd has been the face of Candyman in all the iterations, his inclusion here, however small or large, will continue this tradition.
You can check out the trailer below and the film is due our 12th June 2020.
