Over the years since it’s release in 1897, there have been many different versions of Bram Stoker’s classic blood sucking villain Dracula. From Blade 3’s crude interpretation to Christopher Lee’s powerfull turn, there have been good and bad visions of the prince of darkness. One of the more successful adaptations, was the 1992 film Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which used the novel more closely than any other version. Francis Ford Coppola took Stoker’s novel and layered it with real world history, art and literature, creating a film a powerful film that transcends cinema.

I have been rewatching Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film, Bram Stoker’s Dracula every Halloween for decades. In that time, I obviously noticed a few interesting details but I also came up with questions. For example, how much real history did Coppola include in the film’s epic opening sequence and what real mythology and folklore did Stoker use to create vampire mythos? In this video, I will do a deep dive into those questions and point out other interesting details I noticed in the Bram Stoker’s Dracula film as well as the novel it was based on.
