‘Little Monsters’ Director Tackles ‘Robocop Returns’

Robocop follows a police officer who is killed in the line of duty and brought back as a cyborg programmed to bring law and order to Detroit. The original series ran for three films, two mini series and a TV series, before disappearing from our screens. A 2014 remake directed by Jose Padilha failed to make much of an impression, and the new wave of semi-reboots seems to be the right way to bring back our favorite cyborg cop. The wrap “copped” the scoop when they drop the latest news on this eagerly anticipated film. 

The project is a long-dormant sequel that had been planned by the original 1987 film’s screenwriters Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, but was canceled when director Paul Verhoeven declined to direct the project and a WGA strike in 1988 followed.

Justin Rhodes, who penned Terminator: Dark Fate, also produced the script for Robocop Returns but it seems that Forsythe will be rewriting the script to fit his personal mandate. 

I’m a huge fan of the Robocop series so I really hope they don’t fuck this whole thing up with a half-hearted stab at it.  Original director Paul Verhoeven lovingly embedded the film with his saitired advertising and a twisted view of media and marketing, and it made the film so much more enjoyable. It was these factors that were missing from the rest of the franchise and it was worse off in my opinion. 

I guess we will find out more st the production moves forward. Dead or alive, it’ll be heading to cinemas in the next year or so.
