Bram Stoker’s Dracula – What’s the Difference?
“I am dead to all the world.”
It’s amazing to think that a book written over 120 years ago still has a strong emotional connection within our collective consciousness. The creation of the blood sucking Dracula, stirred the creative pot back in 1897. The folk lore and dark tales of old were suddenly a fiction available the world over, and with Vampires haunting the dreams of 19th century people, early cinema started to adapt this dark tale of the walking undead, into silent movies. Silent movies gave way to new technology that produced colour and sound, and whilst it was the first Universal Studios Dracula film (1931) that caught peoples attention, it was Hammers 1958 Dracula that gave us a charismatic face to the now famous name.
Almost a hundred years after the book was first published, Francis Ford Coppola decided to give the film a shot, and adapted one of the most loved versions of the classic tale. But the big question is, how does it compare with it’s source material? We once again hand this question over to our favourite researchers of both book and film, CineFix and ask them “Bram Stoker’s Dracula – What’s the Difference?”
‘Tis the season for ghouls, goblins and Victorian literature! How did Francis Ford Coppola’s lavish adaptation change Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic horror classic Dracula? Fangs at the ready, it’s time to ask What’s the Difference?!
