‘Hellraiser’ Rights Could Revert Back to Clive Barker in 2021

by | Jun 16, 2020

Whilst Friday the 13th is at the forefront of the larger conversation about the copyright law, it seems that Hellraiser is about to stomp it’s chunky heels into the row. Clive Barker, who created the Hellraiser franchise based on his book The Hellbound Heart, has his very own heart set on grabbing back the rights to his book and ergo, the rights to Hellraiser, Pinhead and everything else attached.  This doesn’t extend to any of the sequels, but without the name and story, a guy with camera stuck in his head probably wont be launching a brand new franchise

Entertainment lawyer and Friday the 13th Part 3 star Larry Zerner, has updated us on some latest news

As Larry mentions, any new films up untill December 21 will be legally fine, but what exactly is going om with the franchiser?

David Gorden Green, the man that re-launched Halloweens franchise in 2019, has a TV show up his sleeve, but with the Corona virus holding back production and the new legal lawsuit, this project now has a huge barb-wired question mark hanging over its head. It’s possible that Green could bring Barker on board, which would be a huge bonus for everyone, but it’s also possible that he could pull the entire project. And even if they did get a show out before the looming date, the possibility of any further seasons would be very unlikely.

There is also Spyglass/David Bruckner film in production, which has also been badly affected by the virus outbreak. As no dates were set for this, it’s possible that the film could be cancelled entirely.

What this means for the future of Hellraiser is unclear right now, and as this story develops, we will gain a better understanding of what will happen. As of now, if Barker is successful in getting back the rights, it would put any future projects on hold. Much as the Friday the 13th court cases have delayed films and video games. We will let you know as soon as more news hits.
