Terrifier (2016)
Terrifier is a 2016 American slasher film starring a blood-curdling fellow by the name of Art the Clown. Art first reared his extraordinarily freaky head in the 2008 short film The 9th Circle which follows his pursuit of a young woman. He then went on to star in the 2011 short film Terrifier, which set up the bigger picture of him as a psychopathic killer. The short’s success led to his first feature film, the anthology movie All Hallows’ Eve (2013), where he made a bloody impression on a wider audience. So much so, that he got his very first own feature film, the as mentioned Terrifier.
Art’s terrifying presence is only enhanced by his lack of color and speech through out all of his appearances. Because of this, he’s actually one of the more truly frightening specimens that should creep out every audience member.
31 (2016)
Rob zombie has always be known for inventive and surprisingly effective horror films. So, it was no surprise that his twisted slice of terror, 31, is just as sick and entertaining.
In 31, Five carnival workers are kidnapped and forced to play a twisted game of life or death. It’s like a back-water version of The Running Man, just without the TV screens and the killers are dressed as clowns. This savage and unapologetic horror is sure to thrill the majority of it’s audience , but it’s certainly should not be on the watch list for any Coulrophobia sufferers.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a cult movie that’s worth a watch for any B-movie enthusiast or horror fanatic. It’s full of gore, laughs and thrills, but it does have one big drawback, great big ugly killer clowns. Even those without a phobia would find the extra-terrestrial deviants hard to swallow.
The film’s plot is light on story, heavy on comedy, as a bunch of aliens decide to feast on a little US town, with humans being the new big thing in the cosmic snack trade. Using weapons such as candy floss guns, popgun rifles and TARDIS like clown cars, these jesters mean business. Fun for horror fans, not so much for anyone with a fear of clowns.
Spawn (1997)
Spawn is a comic book adapted movie about a CIA assassin killed by an explosion and resurrected as the scarred avenger Spawn. With dated, primitive, and terribly unconvincing computer graphics, this 90’s flick felt remarkable similar to many of the 90’s superhero missteps , where visuals outweigh any attempt of a decent story. But there were highlights, or nightmarish smears depending on how you look at it, in the form of John Leguizamo’s disgusting Clown Violator. Whilst most of the film is fairly light on shocks and scream, the foul mouthed Clown is a terrifying visage that will keep Coulrophobia sufferers, and even people without this crippling fear, hiding behind sofas throughout his brief appearance throughout.
Clownhouse (1989)
Funded by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Sam Rockwell in his first film, Clownhouse is unfairly stigmatised by the vile acts of it’s writer-director Victor Salva, who ended up serving time in prison for sexually assaulting the films then-12-year-old star Nathan Forrest Winters. Whilst these crimes should never be downplayed or marginalised, the films popularity quickly dwindled after Salva was sentenced. However overshadowed, the film still remains to be one of the 80’s hidden gems that even had the prestigious accolade of premiering during the 1989 Sundance Film Festival.
The film follows three brothers who are targeted by escaped psychotic mental patients who disguise themselves as circus clowns. For anyone with a fear of classic clowns, these psychotic killers are grease painted nightmares ready to put fear back into the big ring! Whilst Clownhouse is directly playing on Coulrophobia, it doesn’t make it any easier to watch when your petrified by the big hair and creepy red grins.
Stitches (2012)
There’s nothing funny about a group of children being relentlessly cruel to clearly troubled man, but there’s a sick gratification watching his risen corpse maim and mutilate those very same kids in their teen years. Such is the plot line which sees comedian Ross Noble rise from the grave as a vengeful clown.
This black comedy packs a real punch, with impressive special effects, and buckets of gore thrown liberally around, as Stitches comes up with increasingly creative ways of killing the young teens. However, between the guffaws and chortles lies a killer clown movie that is sure to chill the blood of anyone cursed with a fear of harlequins.
IT (1990)
Based on Stephen Kings chilling novel, IT is two-part ABC mini-series that is a four hour nightmare of terrifying clowns and innocent children being maimed and tormented. Whilst it’s 1990 sensibilities have somewhat worn a little bare here and there, the shows firm narrative and outstanding performances from it’s cast make this a much watch for any King or Horror fan.
Tim Curry’s memorably creepy performance as Pennywise, is one of the many reason to feel decidedly torn between loving and hating the film. On one hand, we have a scene stealing performance that is charming, scary and funny at the same time. On the other hand, we have a hell like nightmare of clown make up, razor sharp fangs and spider hands. Not today Satan!!!!
Fear of Clowns (2004)
Fear of Clowns features an artist who purges her fears through painting. But things turns nasty when she is terrified to discover that her nightmarish creations may have taken on a life of their own. Did we mention she paints demented killer clowns? It’s not from the painted canvas that “Shivers the Clown” comes from though, he’s a demented schizophrenic who’s voice are telling him to do the darkest things to make him “better!”
This terrifying tale is a tasteless slasher that shamelessly plays on a fear of clowns. But, oh boy, is Shivers the clown a spine-chilling specimen that will surely give you the worst type of nightmares.
Clown (2014)
Without doubt, 2014’s Clown is one of the most ghastly examples on our list. Being a mix of Stephen King’s two most popular novels. Similar to The Shining, we have a loving family man twisted into a frightful demented figure, one that is a blood thirsty demon hungry for the blood of children, much like Pennywise from IT.
Following the cancelation of his sons party Clown, a can-do attitude Dad puts on an old Clown suit that he finds in the basement of a house, unaware that it’s actually the skin of an ancient child-eating demon. The films slow build and shocking revelations create a thoroughly entertain horror that ticks all the right boxes. It’s just shame that the end result is a monstrous Clown film that will keep every Coulrophobia sufferer cowering from behind the sofa.
